A Quick Stop at Indiana Dunes National Park: Sand, Sunshine, and a Perfect Break From the Road

On our way from Chicago to Traverse City, we made a quick detour to Indiana Dunes National Park. Even though we only had about an hour to explore, it was so worth it. The kids needed to stretch their legs, and this spot ended up being the perfect little reset before getting back on the road.

Getting There

Indiana Dunes is just about an hour outside Chicago, which made it an easy stop to break up the drive. We entered through the state park entrance (just a heads-up—there’s a separate fee for the state park if you’re used to the national park passes).

Mama Tip: If you’re short on time, the state park is a great option—it has easy access to the beach and parking close by.

A Short Beach Break

Once we parked, we made our way straight to the beach. Even in just an hour, the kids were in heaven dipping their toes in Lake Michigan.

We didn’t have time for a hike, but just playing along the shoreline was the perfect way to break up a long travel day. The views here are beautiful—you almost forget you’re in the Midwest!

Don’t Forget

Even if you’re entering through the state park side, Indiana Dunes is still a national park! Make sure to swing by the Visitor Center (right off Highway 49) before or after your visit to grab maps, learn more about the area, and get your National Park Passport stamp. It’s such a fun souvenir and a great way to mark off your adventure.

Final Thoughts

Even though we only spent about an hour at Indiana Dunes State Park, it was exactly what we needed. Sometimes the little stops end up being the most memorable.

If you’re planning a road trip through the Midwest, definitely add this place to your list—even a quick visit is worth it.
